What are all these blockchains and cryptocurrencies? Part 5

05.12.2017

Primavera De Filippi, CERSA/CNRS researcher and member of the Berkman-Klein Center/Harvard

As a new platform for distributed cooperation, blockchain technology can help society move from the rivalry paradigm to the interaction paradigm.
Currently, most organizations are defined by strict organizational boundaries on a set of different functions that already exist somewhere (such as finance, marketing, IT-technologies, etc.). In the near future, new organizational structures may emerge, consisting of links of functional elements interacting with each other using an open and distributed method. Instead of competing at the organization level, competition can be achieved at the level of functional elements, which will allow everyone to concentrate solely on their own competence.

Brian Leah, Founder and Director, Smith + Crown
When we start to realize the potential of the blockchain technology, the first effects will not be noticeable.
First of all, they will declare themselves as additional options in order to control the services and systems that are already part of our life: security, debugged and private payments; monitoring and managing our digital identity and reputation; a staggering mass of new financial products; powerful tools for creating, managing and controlling organizations of all sizes and types. Thanks to the experience, services and applications, we will be able to control our information and money, protect our actions and organize ourselves in ways that we were not able to do before.

Adam Ludwin, Co-Founder and CEO of Chain
Cryptocurrencies allow to decentralize peer-to-peer versions of services that previously required a centralized intermediary, such as payments (Bitcoin instead of Visa), file storage (Filecoin instead of Dropbox), calculations (Ethereum instead of AWS).
These decentralized models sacrifice centralization benefits such as scalability, efficiency, and simplicity, but provide users with protection from censorship. At the moment, this is good only for a small group of people, but things can change if technology or the world around us changes in an unexpected way.

Joseph Poon, co-author of Lightning Network and Plasma
Mankind has always trusted the authorities to build civilizations and companies, otherwise life “will be disgusting, cruel and short.” In order for the work to be done efficiently, we must be sure that our funds are used by the state for its intended purpose — smart contracts will help us with this.
Blockchain is the solution to the problem of the customer-performer, giving access to the necessary data for all interested persons in order to be efficient and economical. At the same time, the blockchain can also create problems. I am afraid that a counterfeit future without a blockchain can be extremely bleak. I hope that this will help us build a society based on the love and self-realization of its members.

Zuko Wilcox, founder and director of Zcash
When historians look back at the present time, they begin to talk about the connections that are now being built as fundamental, which are the result of the evolution of the world economy. Peace and prosperity achieved through overcoming obstacles to economic integration will open endless opportunities.
Already these new financial instruments offer individuals and legal entities around the world the opportunity to interact without borders, without censorship, and introduce new markets. From the Venezuelan family, robbed by the hyperinflationary policy of the country, to the Bardo farm in New Hampshire, providing its community with meat and vegetables, the cryptocurrency is an idea whose time has come.
